5 Important Oral Health Tasks to Do During Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, it’s very important for you to take good care of your smile. In order to maintain a pristine oral health, we strongly recommend doing the following things throughout your pregnancy:

Keep up on oral hygiene
Oral hygiene is extremely important during pregnancy, and it’s also important that you use the right tools when you brush, floss, and rinse every day. So, to help you pick the right tools to use, we recommend choosing products that have the American Dental Association seal of acceptance. This seal proves that the product is the best choice for your smile.

Talk to your dentist
Make sure you visit your dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and checkup. When you are in our office, tell your dentist that you are pregnant so we can look for any dental health signs related to pregnancy. It is also important that you mention the medications you are taking or any special advice you have received from another physician.

Watch for changes in the mouth
Pregnancy can make many changes in the mouth, and some of those changes could be dangerous. So, please keep an eye out for red, swollen, or bleeding gums as well as red, raspberry-like sores on your gums. If you see any of these signs, please call our office and schedule an appointment immediately.

Have a healthy diet
Make sure you get sufficient amounts of nutrients, like vitamins A, C, and D, protein, and calcium, while you are pregnant. This will help you maintain a healthy smile and it will also help your baby grow into the chompers they need as they get older. Also, please do your best to keep snacking to a minimum throughout the day.

Deal with morning sickness
If you frequently throw up, your teeth are constantly exposed to the acid that can destroy them. So, please rinse your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda and water to keep the acid from attacking your smile.

These tasks are very important if you wish to have a strong, healthy, and beautiful smile.
