It’s that time of year when our Smiles Dental team and patients work hard to improve oral health. To keep with the tradition, we have come up with four New Year’s resolutions that can help you and your family members achieve your smile goals in 2013!
Resolution No. 1: Get a new toothbrush.
If you are one who keeps up with a daily oral hygiene routine, it may be time to evaluate the condition of your toothbrush. If you have been using your brush for three months or longer, it is about time for a new one. Or, if your toothbrush looks worn, it’s also time to replace your brush. So, head on down to the nearest store or to one of our Smiles Dental locations and get yourself a brand new brush.
If you have a newer electric toothbrush, you may not need to replace it. Electric brushes tend to last longer than manual toothbrushes and they may not require replacement for a bit longer. But, if you do need to replace it, you can switch the head of the brush with a new head that has strong, clean bristles.
Resolution No. 2: Make flossing fun!
Flossing tends to be at the bottom of the list when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. But, our dentists at Smiles Dental can change your perspective on flossing and finally make it fun!
First, use a floss product that works best for you and your smile. There are many different kinds of dental floss available in the dental world today that may be perfect for your chompers, including unwaxed and woven floss. This is an important consideration because if you don’t like the floss, you won’t use it on a daily basis.
Second, choose a preferable flavor of floss. There are many flavors available that will make flossing more enjoyable, like mint or cinnamon. Also, when purchasing floss, make sure to get a few different packages to leave in your car or by your phone. This will remind you that you need to floss on a regular basis.
Resolution No. 3: Cut sugar out of your diet.
We are constantly surrounded by sugar once the holidays come around, which is why it is important to cut down on the amount of sugar you consume once the new year begins. Start by cutting down on soda and sugary drinks and replace those drinks with water.
Eliminate sweets from your diet each day and instead eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, and meats. When you do this, it is likely that you will have a craving for sugary food, but if you endure and refuse to give in, the cravings should go away fairly quickly. These changes to your diet will not only help your smile, but they will also help your overall health!
Resolution No. 4: Sleep soundly.
Getting a good night’s sleep is priceless, especially because sleep makes a big contribution to your overall health. Sleeping more will reduce stress, help you feel better, and help you eat less overall calories.
Take advantage of the long nights and go to bed as early as possible so you can get a full night’s sleep. Before you go to bed, calm your brain and body with herbal tea and a good book. Creating this habit as a resolution will help you feel better and will give you a chance to show off your beautiful smile!
